DANDELIONS MYTHS AND FOLKLORE

It is said that if you make a wish immediately before blowing a dandelion, your wish just might come true. Another belief was that the number of seeds left after blowing the seed head indicated the number of children that a girl would have in later life.

A common tale is that the number of seeds that were left represents time, giving rise to the term dandelion clock for the seed head. The dandelion flower opens an hour after sunrise and closes at dusk giving rise to the belief that it is a ‘Shepherd’s clock’.
According to Scott Cunningham, author of over thirty books on herbs and Wicca, the dandelion is said to increase psychic abilities when taken as a tea. A tea of the roots left steaming and placed beside the bed will call spirits. Dandelion buried in the northwest corner of the house will bring favourable winds.
The dandelion is an excellent barometer, one of the most common and reliable. It is when the blooms have seeded and are in the fluffy, feathery condition that its weather prophet comes into play. In fine weather, the ball extends to the full, but when rain approaches, it shuts like an umbrella. If the weather is showery it keeps shut all the time, only opening when the danger from the wet has past.

I wrote an outline for a novel called 'Dandelion Wind' a few months now. I'm eager to write the story but need to complete my trilogy first. So it will be a while. ;o)

Again, it's a tale of reality vs fantasy. A story of an artist, an 'HSP' (Highly Sensitive Person), struggling to maintain a difficult relationship, while trying to find her place in the world.

An HSP – tends to be more “aware” of his or her inner world, and generally spends more time in introspection than most people. Highly Sensitive Persons are also more aware of subtleties, feelings and tiny patterns which can be a wonderful gift, but it means they are also more deeply affected and influenced by the ups and downs of  life. As a result, they’re more susceptible to getting bogged down in the endless analysis when they hit life’s challenging patches. Change can be difficult.

Dandelions and daisies are flowers that I remember well from childhood. They hold a certain magic for me, from making wishes to decorations such as the daisy chain. It seemed perfect to center a story around dandelions ~ a book character's wish to wind.  ;o)
