The story of Andreth and Aegnor

Link to art HERE
Andreth was wisewoman from the House of Bëor. She was called Saelind by the Elves, for she was wise in thought and learned in the lore of Men.

Andreth was the elder daughter and second child of Boromir and a sister to her brother Bregor and her sister Beril.

In her youth, she dwelt in the house of her uncle, Belemir, where she had learned the lore of the House of Marach from his wife, the Wisewoman Adanel.
Andreth was deeply in love with the Noldorin Elf-lord Aegnor, the son of Finarfin and Eärwen and the brother of Finrod, Orodreth, Angrod, and Galadriel his sister. During the Siege of Angband the Elf-lord saw young Andreth in the reflection of Aeluin and they fell in love with each other. However, he could not reciprocate her love since, according to the law of the Eldar, no marriages could happen during times of war. It is said that because of her sake, he would not take any Elven bride. Both remained unwed and childless.

She grew in knowledge and understanding of lore and as she grew older she was respected as a wisewoman after Adanel.

She had a close friendship with Aegnor's eldest brother, King Finrod of Nargothrond, who often visited her during the Siege to converse with her wisdom on the matters of Elves and Men. One such conversation was written down and later known as Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth.

Finrod. First encounter with Edain - Then he went among the sleeping people, and sat beside their dying fire where non-kept watch; and he took up a rude harp which Beor had laid aside, and he played music upon it such as the ears of Men had not heared; for they had as yet no teachers in the art, save only the Dark Elves in the wild lands...

Inspired by the Words for last of "Atrabeth Finrod ah Andreth"
you in the shadows looking at me
and waiting for a decision, if the sentence.
That's just the heat of heart of fire
is not extinguished nor brother nor lord.
My younger brother. My loyal vassal.
You, for the first time ready to revolt,
is now afraid to admit to myself,
What the judgment had expected.
Well, be quiet. You know Aykanar,
that the choice of Fate is not granted:
you disperse fatal fire,
And the time left is too small.
But what hurt himself
in the short-lived happiness refuse decide!
Senhora brother easier to comply.
But no - not free I am your destiny.
as you know yourself, solve, create, live -
I can not judge the heart of Velenje:
I, too, refused to love ...
well, you took a bitter decision.
you - forever Halls silence
her - the way in the worlds, and I - earthly longing.
you I chose, brother. I accept the choice.
That's just whether it will accept it? ..
How clearly I see in your eyes,
That soon the wind will scatter your ashes ...
What you will perish in the northern mountains,
I have come to you for help do not have time ...
Who can look for Okoem,
stay wise in this world, distorted? ..
But I know that in Arda restored
we will gain back their favourite.

"Now he will ever remember thee in the sun of morning, and that last evening by the water of Aeluin in which he saw thy face mirrored with a star caught in thy hair—ever, until the North-wind brings the night of his flame. Yea, and after that, sitting in the House of Mandos in the Halls of Awaiting until the end of Arda." - Tolkien

  1. I found these by googling "Andreth" who is one of my favourite characters. The pictures are lovely - they've got a very Burne-Jones feel about them, and I loved the picture of Finarfin and his family too. I was glad to come across the reference to Arda Restored. That made me feel a little bit less sad.

Bravo for the whole of this post!
